Cloud-point extraction praktyka
THE ALTERNATIVE APPROACH TO SAMPLE PREPARATION
Cloud-point extraction (CPE) consists in use of aqueous surfactant solution as the extrac-
tion medium for compounds characterized by an appropriate hydrophobic character.
Under conditions of above the critical micellar concentration and cloud point tempera-
ture of the given surfactant, the micelles are created that in their core the analyte is
isolated. The main factors influencing on efficacy of CPE may be listed: sample pH, type
and concentration of surfactant and volume of solvent for micellar phase. The use of
CPE technique in a variety of chemical analysis areas were exemplified by the appropri-
ate applications. The CPE method possess many advantages (e.g.: simplicity, low costs,
ecological character), as well as some limitations (e.g.: lack of possibility to combination
with MS, necessary to wash surfactant out thoroughly from a chromatographic column).
Generally, it may be stated that CPE may be an effective and useful sample preparation
technique in many cases of chemical analyses.
