Determination of neopterin Praktyka
in urine samples
BY SELECTED ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES
Neopterin is synthesized by human monocytes/macrophages as a result of stimulation with interferon-γ, it can be
also generally considered as an indicator of oxidative stress during inflammation. The concentration of neopterin
correlates with the activity of Th1 and progression of the disease. Increased concentrations of neopterin caused
by the pathogen are identified in serum, plasma, pancreatic juice, urine or gastric. Quantitative analysis of neop-
terin can be useful in the early diagnosis, assessment of the course, prognosis and monitoring of treatment of
many diseases, in which an activation of the immune system is observed. In this paper the clinical relevance of
neopterin, as well selected analytical techniques used to determine neopterin in urine samples were presented.
