Development of polemiki, problemy
chromatographic techniques
– USED IN POLISH LABORATORIES ENGAGED IN PHARMACEUTICAL ANALYSIS
In this article, we describe the development of chromatographic techniques, which took place in the Polish
laboratories engaged in pharmaceutical analysis. The first chromatographic technique which was used in the
pharmaceutical analysis was so-called capillary analysis, a technique similar to the paper chromatography, which
developed in the laboratories in the interwar period. In the postwar period pharmaceutical laboratories started
to use planar techniques: paper electrophoresis and paper chromatography, which gradually gave way to the
thin-layer chromatography. Both the paper chromatography technique, as well as thin-layer chromatography
were used in the phytochemical analysis, to assess the identity and the quality of herbal medicines, as well as the
isolation of active compounds from complex pharmaceutical formulations containing fillers, additives, impurities,
and decomposition products. In parallel, but on a smaller scale, gas chromatography have developed. Currently
popular high-pressure liquid chromatography technique appeared in pharmaceutical laboratories in the early
eighties of the twentieth century.
Key words: chromatography, electrophoresis, history, pharmaceutical analysis.
